Best Paper in Translational Bioinformatics

20131001_Piture Bonzanni PaperThe paper on “Hard-wired heterogeneity in blood stem cells revealed using a dynamic regulatory network model” by Nicola Bonzanni (VU), Anton Feenstra (VU), Jaap Heringa (VU, NBIC) and co-workers received the Best Paper in Translational Bioinformatics awards at the international ISMB/ECCB Bioinformatics conference in Berlin, where 86 papers were presented in the proceedings track.

The work presents a boolean model of a gene transcription network that regulates cellular differentiation in blood stem cells. From the model a new gene interaction was predicted and subsequently confirmed. This work helps us to understand this complicated cellular decision process, which is important for understanding diseases like anaemia and leukemia.
